History
Jehanabad was carved out of the old Gaya district on 1 August 1986, and had been a sub-division of Gaya since 1872. The name is traced to a “mandi” set up in Mughal times and associated with Jahanara, after whom the place came to be known as Jahanarabad and later Jehanabad.
Economy
The district economy is almost entirely agricultural, with paddy, wheat and maize as the main crops and no significant industry. Much of the district is irrigated, but infrastructure and power gaps limit what farmers earn.
Figures are from the district administration's published profile (2011 census where noted). This site is not a government website.
